It offers a covering for the working parts of the lock assembly. That helps to secure the lock in the event that as person trying to break in is using something to pick the lock.

No, it’s not entirely foolproof, but it does serve as a fairly good detriment for the burglar. It serves to keep you just a little more secure too. The cost difference is about twenty dollars per door. For that price, I’d go for the jimmy proof variety.
