If you’re in the market for a new lock for your door, then you might just be one of those folks who think all door locks are alike and any one will do the job of locking the door. That is partly true, but there are better, and worse kinds for security in the staying locked aspects of your home. Picking the one that matches your lovely door means that you’re getting pretty, but may not so practical.

The best kind of lock for security is a deadbolt. We’ve all known that for years, so we pick one and go home to install it. The truth is that while all those locks out there, including the doorknob variety are going to lock the door for you, some kinds will keep it locked even when someone is trying to get into your home. Deadbolts can be opened. The very determined thief can open your deadbolt without question. The way a deadbolt works is that you have a large opening in the wood or metal of your door frame. The deadbolt that is attached to the other area features a bolt that is extruded into that opening. Turning the key or the thumb opening device on the lock will cause that the bolt will either extend into the hole, or retract out of it.

Most of the deadbolts that you find in the home stores or in departments stores are that simple. Some deadbolt locks are a bit more secure than that however. Those are called jimmy proof locks.

Some deadbolts offer you protection for the assembly as well as adaptor rings for the lock assembly. The protector is placed between the cylinder and the assembly of the bolt. It offers a covering for the working parts of the lock assembly. That helps to secure the lock in the event that as person trying to break in is using something to pick the lock.

No, it’s not entirely foolproof, but it does serve as a fairly good detriment for the burglar. It serves to keep you just a little more secure too. The cost difference is about twenty dollars per door. For that price, I’d go for the jimmy proof variety.
