Drying Your Herbs at Home

Not only flowers, but also herbs can be dried at home. There are a few difference between drying the two, even if the herbs are flowering ones. You will want to be sure that you dry the two of them in different ways, depending on what use you’re going to make of the herbs that you’re drying.

Select the flowers, herbs, and flowering herbs when the weather is dry. Picking them in a rainy day will mean that they take a great deal longer to dry and when you bunch them they may in fact rot rather than dry nicely.

You will want to pick them after noon if you live in an area where the dew is a factor. Spreading them out on a paper town for a few minutes prior to hanging them is a very good idea if you’re going to be hanging them up to dry.

To use your herbs or flowering herbs for the dried flower arrangements you will want to hang them. You can prevent them from dropping petals and heads to flowers, or the stems from breaking if you give them a little prep before you hang them. Much the same way as you would for the flowers, add a bit of florist wire in the stem of the herbs that you will use for wreaths and other things. Leave a little but out at the end of the stem. This will make it much easier for you to attach them to your craft projects. Herbs can be brittle and sometimes fragile when you work with them after drying. Adding the wire now means that you have to work with them less lately.

To make sure that the colors stay bright and as true as possible, hang them in a darkened area that is well ventilated but has very little natural light. The ideal place is the rafters of your garage, the attic or some other place along the same lines. The brighter the light the more the flowers will fade as they dry.

Your Herbs which you’re going to use to cook with however should not be hung upside down. Hanging the culinary herbs upside down will remove some of the essential oils in the plant and cause them to have less taste. Dry the herbs that you will use for cooking on layered paper towels. This tends to keep the oils inside the plants where they belong if you want to get a better flavor.

You can also, alternatively, dry herbs very nicely in a microwave on very low power.
