Fingerprint door locks are being touted as the wave of the future. With a great price tag and a superb reputation, how well do they really perform and can you beat them?”
Having done a bit of researching into the fingerprint lock technology, we think it’s a great idea and it has a lot of potential to secure your home well. The problem is that we’ve not seen any further testing or commentary since it was defeated by the Mythbusters show.
The bolts are indeed secure and the technology of the lock is certainly sound. The myth that they can’t be broken into was certainly dispelled recently when one of these state of the art wonders ( no one is saying what model or manufacturer it belonged to) was defeated by several different methods, one of them so simple that it was frightening.
If there have been changes made to these super expensive locks since they were broken into two years ago, no one is talking about that. Until they do, we think we’re going to stick with our cheaper and less technical door locks. They at least took some extra time to break in to.
If you haven’t read the story, Mythbusters found a means to get past the lock in several ways in just a few minutes.
“Mythbusters” copied the fingerprint of the owner onto a bit of latex and then attached it to their thumb. They also did it again by making a simple photocopy of the fingerprint and adding saliva to it.
Before you buy your fingerprint door lock, do your homework and find one that is worth the time and the money that you’re going to spend. You want to at least be sure it can pass the photocopy and saliva test.
