Gardening in Containers

For those who live in the city, in an apartment, or in an area where there simply isn’t a lot of room for gardening, the perfect solution for you may be a container garden.

If you’re a city dweller now but a country person at heart, the spring time sees you itching to get your hands into some soil and start gardening. Container gardening is something that can be done in a laundry room using grow lights, on a patio or back porch or nearly any other place that has some sunshine available to it.
Containers can range from old whiskey barrels to regular planters, to almost anything you want. Plants that are specifically designed to grow in container gardens are out there too.

Hanging tomato plants, tree style tomato plants, heavy bearing strawberries, and other kinds of vegetables are great for container gardens. Other things that work well are tomatoes, which tend to vine upward, pole beans, even corn can be a container plant.

If you’re the kind of person who loves to garden but you simply don’t have the room, consider a container garden for your springtime gardening this year.

Begin with five or six containers that are about 12 or 14 inches across and at least 8 inches deep. You can grow nearly anything in this kind of container, from corn to beans to cucumbers.

In addition to vegetable gardens in containers you can also grow multiple pots of fresh herbs to season your meals. If you like you may grow a wide array of flowers, including roses, that will enhance your yard or porch without taking up a lot of space, or involving a lot of expense.
