Have a Yard Sale for your Collections

While the yard sale idea is not strictly saving money, it does fit into our category of ways to keep your costs down and lower household expenses. The yard sale can help you in multiple ways.

If you’re a collector of junk and you’re simply having trouble getting rid of it, in fact keep adding to it, consider pulling it all out of the closet and having a yard sale to eliminate some of the extemporaneous crap from your household.

Take a look at your hobbies. Do you craft or collect things ardently? Most of us have over the course of our lifetime collected more than one type of object. Whether your collections are golf balls, golf clubs, china dolls or craftsman wrenches you can only have so many of them and after a while the collection begins to be less fun and you move on to something else.

If so then one sure way to cut expenses is to eliminate those collections that you’re not avidly adding to or are passionate about as you used to be. Sometimes we collect things merely because we got into the habit. One of those things for me was MI Hummels. After several years of collecting them because my mom had collected them, I realized that I just wasn’t as passionate about the art form as I’d once been but to be honest, bought them more from habit than for any other reason.

Taking stock of that it seemed rather foolish to continue to spend money on something that I didn’t actually enjoy that much any more but simply collected to keep as an investment or give to kids or relatives.. The yard sale and consignment shop down the street got the collection and I made a nice sum of money to put toward things that I was passionate about. Selling the collection did save money in the long run. As silly as it sounds, for as long as it sat there, I’d have added to it out of habit.

Take a look at your own habits and see if you’ve got one that is costing you plenty and then sell the collection or the items that you’ve got and take advantage of the savings it will offer you when you’re no longer feeding the collection.

If you have items that you collect that you ardently love and continue to collect then by all means keep them, but sell the ones that you don’t and use the savings to put new things into the collection that you actually like. In the long haul, selling off your collections will keep you from buying more things out of habit and put money in your pocket to buy the things that you do like.
