Gardening in an organic way is of course better for our health, the health of our children and the environment. It is safer for the animals, as well as our property and our pets.
What about things like controlling weeds, and keeping the flies and other pests at bay? How do we make sure that our plants will grow healthy and with a good yield if we are avoiding the more harsh chemicals that are accomplishing that task for us?
Are there natural methods to do those things that will keep the earth a cleaner place, or are we pretty much stuck with chemicals?
Chemicals of some kinds are not entirely bad. Some are actually made from natural ingredients. Others are made from the byproducts of those natural plant matters.
Our gardens fertilization can be done using all natural fertilizers. We often use things such as steer manure. Another method to assure the garden does well is a compost pile that will help us to get rid of a lot of garbage that might otherwise go into a landfill. It will help to make our gardens richer, as well as to prevent the landfill use.
Using natural fertilizers for our gardens prevents the ingestion of chemicals by our pets as well. If your cat or dog roams the outside and then comes in to clean themselves, very often they are ingesting the chemicals that we use in our typical gardening. Organic gardening solves this problem for us.
Insect control is another matter. Insects quite often are hardy creatures who like a given food. If it’s something that you’ve planted and you truly want to stay chemical free, then very often you can find a natural deterrent that will keep them at bay. Some herbs have properties that repel or kill insects.
Other plants may have just slugs or something along those lines, where you can use a type of earth that will actively kill them. Take care even when using the natural methods of insect killers though. While they may be all natural and will not stay long in the soil, they may just kill insects that you do want as part of our garden, along with those that you don’t.
