There are several ways to deter insects in your yard and garden, as well as to treat your pets for things like fleas without resorting to the very harsh chemical things
One way you probably already know. Marigolds work hard to deter things like mosquitoes and other type of insects that love your yard and garden. They keep them at bay by using natural oil that smells spicy to the average person, but is really a bad smell to the insect world. For the most part, flying insects are strongly repelled by it. Flies, mosquitoes and even gnats will evade the scent. Even aphids and small vegetable bugs are repelled by marigold oil.
Flea Mint is another plant that tends to repel insects. Guess which one that flea mint will repel? If you’re tired of your yard being overrun by fleas consider adding a natural deterrent to the small but troublesome bug. Flea Mint is also known, more properly by the name Pennyroyal. It can grow literally anywhere at all, sunny or shady areas, and will deter the fleas quite nicely.
Feverfew, Lavender and Sage are also plants that tend to deter fleas as well as other insects.
One plant that is well worth growing as well as buying products that are made from it is the Daisy. These little beauties not only look great in your garden, but are also very strong natural insect deterrents.
The Pyrethrum Daisy is a natural insecticide that you may know that is used in natural flea products as well as other medication for pets. It is known as pyrethrin. This is used to make natural flea treatments as well as natural medication that is used to control ear mites in cats, dogs and other animals. These daisies are beautiful additions to your yard or garden. They are small and white with bright yellow centers.
The last method of treating your yard or garden for fleas that occurs naturally does require a little additional care on your part. Diatomaceous Earth is recommended by nearly every natural gardener as a flea repellent and can be used on your pet as well as outside. The earth is made up or small but very sharp particles of tiny sea animals. The sharp parts will literally shred the outer skeleton of the flea or other insect and will kill them. Wear a mask when you use it as breathing it in is not in your best interests.
Take care where you sprinkle it as it also kills the insects that you want, such as butterflies, as well as those you don’t want.
