As we’ve noted, one of the best ways to stay safe is to be aware of your area, know what’s around you and know what areas seem like a good place to move toward in the event of a problem. That holds true for parking lots too.
Store parking lots are one of the number one areas where people are mugged, where cars are stolen or where people may be accosted or robbed. Keep yourself safe by paying attention and by not putting yourself in harm’s way.
A few good tips that will help you to avoid dangerous situations are listed here for your convenience. Commit them to memory and practice them. While they don’t guarantee that you’re going to be safe, they are simply a good practice.
Park as closely as possible to where you are going to be. This is particularly true if it will be or already is dark when you arrive and it will be dark and late when you leave.
Back into the parking lot space if you can do so. It allows you to leave rapidly if you need to.
Park only in a well-lit area. If you are traveling alone, make sure that there is lighting where you park your vehicle. Don’t park in side streets or alleys in the late evening. Park on a street if possible when you are not in a parking lot. Make sure that there is open space and that you can see around you adequately or don’t park there.
If you get that “something isn’t right feeling” never ignore it. Stay in your car or leave.
When you leave your car take all of your valuables with you. If you can’t, lock them in the trunk, don’t leave them in sight.
When it’s late or early, leave your car locked until you leave it. Before you shut off your car, gather up everything that you want to take with you.
Double check your surroundings. Before you get out of the car, take a second look around you.
Carry your keys in your hand when returning to your car.
Lock your car doors once you are safely inside.
