Water Gardens

Everyone considers that a water garden is one of the most difficult things to build and to maintain. The reality is that they can be hard to work with, but they don’t have to be.

You can take a spot not larger than a yard square and turn it into a showpiece in your yard or garden for a very small outlay. No matter how small your space you can do a water garden that will impress yourself and your family.

Our tiny yard was just about 12 feet square so there wasn’t much room to get the water feature we wanted, but with some determination and a little elbow grease we got just the water feature that we wanted. Our water feature ended up about 3 feet deep, three feet across and when it was completed it housed its own small ecosystem.

Frogs came to visit us, dragonflies and many other small creatures. The pond had rocks around it, flowers between the rocks and greenery such as fiddlehead ferns growing between the rocks and flowers. It was an easy accomplishment.

One small was hole was dug, lined with a heavy plastic liner. The rocks surrounding it held the pool liner down, which we filled with pea gravel. Several water lilies were sunk in pots, while gold fish swam around aimlessly between them.
One very small submersible pump ran the entire affair.

The total cost to build it was about 24 hours’ work and 100 dollars for supplies. Getting a water feature isn’t all that hard and can be done quite inexpensively.

While it sounds too easy, it wasn’t, but could have been easier still. I personally love the small pond liners that come in the shape of kidney, butterfly or other shapes. They are available at most department store, as well as garden centers.

As the rain came down and washed away small amounts of soil into the pond we left it there, and the pond began to build its own little world. Dragonflies appeared frequently, the fish laid eggs and made more, and the little world continued to grow.

If you’ve always wanted a water feature but you just didn’t want to spend the money, consider digging and building your own. The price is right and you get exactly what you want.
