For most people, that’s not a question that really needs a response. You can have a fire at any time, day or night. If you do have a minor fire, can you put it out before it grows to a larger one that engulfs your home?
Do you have at least two fire extinguishers in your home and when did you last test them to assure that they were working properly? Are they past the date when they need recharged?
If a fire, even a small one should break out, you want the ability to extinguish it as rapidly as possible. Having only water sometimes isn’t an option. The right fire extinguisher, located in a central place where everyone knows about it means that you have a better chance of getting the fire out.
Fires, sadly enough, just are not something you expect, but you can plan ahead for one by having the means to put it out if you can.
A few things on fire extinguishers that you want to consider:
There are several varieties. They are made to extinguish a specific type of fire but there is on that is rated for wood, electric, as well as grease. This is your best option if you’ve only got the money for one variety.
Make sure that everyone knows how to use the extinguisher. Make it a point to tell your kids that in the event of a fire they are to leave the home immediately, not try to fight the blaze. Children have strange ideas at times about the heroic aspects of putting out a fire. Stress the importance of leaving immediately and calling 911 or your local emergency services.
That being said it is still a very good idea that everyone knows how the extinguisher operates and how to make it function. In the event of a path being blocked by fire knowing how to knock it down and get out is a necessity.
